Wetlands of Lucena.

These lagoons were declared Integral Reserves by the Andalusian Parliament in 1984, and in 1989, classified as Natural Reserves (Law 2/1989, of July 18, on the inventory of Protected Natural Spaces). In addition, the permanently watered ones have been part of the Set of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention since 1990 and are considered a SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) by the European Union. In the municipal area of Lucena, we find several integral reserves that are within the protected area known as the Lagoons of Southern Cordoba, some of which have a high ecological content as they are wet for much of the year or always. This is also an area where the enjoyment of nature is very possible because the conservation conditions, due to these lagoons, are still quite acceptable. In this way, we highlight:

Laguna Amarga: Located in the municipal area of Lucena and near the village of Jauja, it has permanent and brackish waters, as they have a high concentration of magnesium sulfate, which gives it a bitter taste and hence its name. Its wide perillagunar belt, with a thickness between 2 and 9 meters, is enriched with Taraje, which serves as shelter for a large number of birds. Kidney-shaped, it has a maximum depth of 4 meters and an area of 13 hectares of Natural Reserve and 250 of protection. With a rich underwater vegetation composed of Coots, Grebes, Mallards, Red Shoveler, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Shoveler, and of course, the Mallard and the Purple Swamphen, the latter two species reproducing annually in its rich belt. Its surroundings are dedicated to agricultural activities, mainly olive growing, with the exception of an area where rocks emerge, and Mediterranean shrubbery grows.

Laguna de los Jarales: It is a small lagoon of temporary and brackish waters, located in the municipal area of Lucena, on Oligocene lands, within a wide area of rainfed crops, basically olives, cereals, and vines. Practically circular, it completely lacks a perillagunar belt, although its underwater vegetation is very important. With an area of 5.46 hectares of Natural Reserve and 116 of protection, it has a maximum depth of 0.4 meters. It hosts a large number of ducks and waders during the winter. It is usually used as a resting place by groups of Mallards.

Laguna Dulce: Laguna Dulce was drained for 25 years for cereal cultivation and has now been acquired by the administration and restored with the intention of achieving the most natural state possible. For this purpose, drains were eliminated, and the banks were reforested. The spatial distribution of this lagoon and its neighbor, Laguna Amarga, is curious. Although they are located less than 50 meters from each other, the physico-chemical characteristics of their waters are very different, as indicated by their own names. One has bitter waters, and the other sweet waters. One is seasonal, and the other is permanent. All this means that there are different species in each of them, increasing the diversity of the whole and complementing each other.

Embalse de Malpasillo: Reservoir located south of Cordobilla, on the Genil River, on a steep relief, it sits on soil formed by gypsum marls. In the riparian vegetation, it is worth noting the abundance of reeds, rushes, and bulrushes. Malpasillo constitutes the ideal habitat for the Purple Swamphen, and the rare white-headed duck has also been surveyed in it. Among the most abundant ducks are the Mallard or Wild Duck, the Red Shoveler, and the Northern Shoveler. Like Cordobilla, the Natural Site of the Malpasillo reservoir is located south of the province of Córdoba and northeast of Seville. Its area is 512 hectares.
